Autumn wedding flowers

I can't think of anything cosier than warm rusty and burnt toned flowers to complement an autumn wedding, with a backdrop of leaves turning golden, red colours and lovely early evening sunlight in autumn. So where to start when you are choosing autumn wedding flowers?

  1. Work with the season - Selecting seasonal flowers will mean that you'll get the most gorgeous, high quality blooms. Trying to find out of season flowers means compromising on quality. There's a reason we don't use peonies in autumn weddings. So my tip would be to choose a florist that's got expertise in working seasonally and trust them to help you select the best flowers available.

  2. Think shapes and textures - Share your ideas, inspiration and tell them the shapes and textures you love. This will help your florist to talk you through the different flowers and options to design and deliver your vision

  3. Choose your colour - We often think of warm, burnt, rusty tones and colours when we think about autumn flowers. In reality you can find the whole range of colour pallets well into autumn. Though warmer tones will be more prevalent and as usual, blue will be difficult (there aren't many naturally occurring blue flowers).

  4. Foliage and seed pods - Autumn gives lots of unique textures and and lush foliage to work with. you can also think about incorporating seed pods into your arrangements too. I often like to use poppy seed heads inbouquets and button holes and then give the couple the seeds to sow in their garden as a lasting memory.

Depending on the weather, lots of late summer flowers will continue to bloom and look lovely right through into autumn such as scabious, cosmos and some roses. Here's some of the British flowers that are at there best in autumn:

Amaranthus

Aster

Coreopsis Crysanthemums

Dahlias Hydrangea

Japanese Anenome

Rudbeckia

Sanguisorba

Dahlias

Zinnias
